Efudex

Efudex is a prescription topical chemotherapy cream containing fluorouracil, a medication designed to destroy abnormal, fast-growing skin cells while sparing healthy tissue.

Efudex can be an effective treatment for:

  • Actinic Keratosis (AK): Rough scaly patches on the skin that could progress to skin cancer.

  • Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma: A type of skin cancer that remains in the upper layers of the skin.

Efudex offers a non-invasive way to treat these conditions, eliminating the need for surgical intervention in many cases.

How does Efudex work?

Efudex works by interfering with the DNA of abnormal skin cells, preventing them from growing and dividing. This targeted action causes these cells to brreak down and die, allowing healthier skin to regenerate in their place.

During treatment, it's normal to experience visible changes in your skin as the medication takes effect. This may include redness, peeling, and discomfort in the treated areas. These signs indicate that the damaged cells are being destroyed.

Follow-Up Care

Efudex is applied directly to the affected areas of the skin, usually twice a day for 2-4 weeks, depending on the severity of the condition. It's important to follow your provider's instructions carefully to ensure effective treatment.

As the medication works, the skin may go through several stages.

  • The treated area will become red and inflamed as the medication targets damaged cells.

  • Damaged cells will break down, leading to peeling or crusting of the skin.

  • Once the damaged cells are eliminated, the skin will begin to heal, revealing healthier, smoother skin beneath.

Your provider will monitor your progress and provide guidance on managing any discomfort during the treatment. After the treatment period, they will evaluate your skin to ensure that all abnormal cells have been addressed.

Consultation with Your Provider

Your provider will evaluate your skin and determine if Efudex is the right treatment for your condition. They'll also explain how to apply the cream, how often to use it, and what results to expect.
